  1. Thank you for your great blog here, dealing with self-loathing.  I do see a correlation between self-loathing and low self esteem.  One of the hard things to deal with when it comes to low self-esteem is that more often than not it happens during childhood, and it becomes hard to overcome.  I think you have given some good tips, in particular, trying to not please everyone all the time.  Sometimes you have to be a little “confrontational” and stand up for your wants and needs.  If this is practiced enough, it can help build one’s courage.

    1. Sadly but truly. Having to deal with childhood trauma can eventually lead to self-loathing. It’s extremely important for adults to keep an eye on their children, and provide them with resources that they might need to start healing from anything that they’ve endured that might lead to low self-esteem.

  2. I can relate to your post about feelings of unworthiness. I grew up being told I was less than what I was, I was abandoned by every man that walked into my mums life and I was always told I ruined things. I grew up believing I wasn’t worthy. I can probably say I had a huge self hatred and I did escape my sadness using drugs and alcohol that only made things worse in the long run. I managed to help myself by developing my spirituality. I think supporting others and solving their worries and sadness helped me to find inner peace. I definitely still suffer feeling good enough but I am a lot better now. Having children definitely gave me something to be better for. I think self help books are also great. I have a whole cupboard full of those kinds of books. We can implement little things each day to help us stay focused on the positives instead of the negatives in life.

    1. I’m so sorry to hear about how rough your childhood was and how the adults in your life didn’t provide the necessary resources for you to get the help you needed. I’m glad that you’ve slowly learned to work with what helps you feel at peace with yourself. I hope you’re doing much better nowadays. I’m rooting for you xx

  3. Low self-esteem is something that many people suffer from. They think they are undeserving, unlovable, and ugly and even they themselves loathe the person they see in the mirror.

I personally witnessed this in my cousin after her stepfather sexually abused her for years. Even though she finally got the justice she deserved when her stepdad was put behind bars, the trauma she suffered took a toll on her. She felt so disgusted with herself that she started to jump from one man to another. And as her big sister, that was very devastating for me.

I took her for counseling hoping that she would be able to recover from her feeling of disgust toward herself. At the same time, I kept telling her that what happened to her was not her fault. We, her family, did not stop reassuring her how beautiful a person she was inside and out.

Thank God, she’s a very different person today. She now has a family of her own and she’s very happy that no one would think she had a dark past.

I found these tips for overcoming self-loathing and improving self-esteem very helpful. Thank you, Stephanie.

    1. Hi Alice!

Your comment truly struck me. I am so sorry to hear about your cousin. I am glad that she had such a good supportive system and that you guys reassured her that it was not her fault, it is never the victims fault. So grateful that she got the necessary treatment and help that she needed and that today, she’s doing so much better. The trauma is still there and the scars are undeniable, she’s a warrior and it makes me so happy to read that she got justice!
