Melatonin Alternatives

Being diagnosed with insomnia ever since I was 15 years old has been quite a rollercoaster. While other kids my age would be getting a good night’s sleep to be energized for the next school-day, I would be up all night listening to music and avoiding my ongoing thoughts.

As I grew older I started seeing a professional mental health psychiatrist – to which I’m still seeing – and he prescribed me some pills that were supposedly made specifically for insomnia patients. From 15 mg to 30 mg a dose and yet, I still can’t sleep a full 6-8 hours. I barely slept for 2-4 hours. Imagine how draining that must’ve been, right?

After talking to my psychiatrist he recommended I take my already prescribed pill along with a 10mg Melatonin supplement, which I did for a long time, but I also found some melatonin alternatives that are just as good as the supplement itself, and they actually do what they claim to do – at least that’s been my experience throughout all of this time.

Melatonin Alternatives

LUNA Sleep Aid

This herbal sleep aid has been created with natural and safe-checked ingredients, which provide its users to have a healthier sleeping habit and one that does not include staying up all night nor feeling overwhelmed with the lack of energy that you wake up with.

Grain-free, lactose-free, gluten-free, vegan, and GMO-free (which is one of the things that I mostly look forwards when finding new supplements because I don’t want to put unnecessary preservatives into my system that could potentially make me feel ill.)

It is also a non-habit forming supplement that can keep you at ease knowing that you won’t be forming unhealthy habits.

Do These Supplements Include Melatonin?

“Melatonin is a hormone that your brain produces in response to darkness. It helps with the timing of your circadian rhythms (24-hour internal clock) and with sleep. Being exposed to light at night can block melatonin production.” (source)

As mentioned before, melatonin is self-produced by our own bodies (our brain and retina) therefore, we already have a certain amount of this hormone. Saying that other sleep-aids are melatonin-free is a big stretch and really misleading. Of course, there are melatonin alternatives that you can take, but just because they’re melatonin alternatives it doesn’t mean that they won’t include melatonin because that would be a lie.

Melatonin alternatives are mostly used, in my own personal opinion, to disguise the supplement and also, to add other beneficial supplements to our nightly routine that can improve our everyday productivity.

  1. Luna sleep aid sounds like something that would benefit me greatly. I too have trouble sleeping or staying asleep at night but never thought anything of it before reading your article. And you have dealt with this since the age of 15, how sad. Great content and I really enjoyed reading this article. Will seriously look into luna sleep aid.

  2. Wow Interesting review you have given here. How explicit this is in terms of the research it must have taken for you to come up with such a piece as this here with all the details here being intact too. L-Theanine Supplements: Theanine is another melatonin alternative that does not have any known side effects. First discovered in green tea, it is now typically found in a number of different types of tea. It is known to act as a natural sedative and has a calming effectI believe that so much more can be made to focus on this and I will like to participate in this here too. An overview worthy you have given here to us all.

    1. Thank you for stopping by and taking the time to read this. Hopefully you were able to find something that suits your needs.

  3. This is a straight and to the point site on melatonin alternatives and sleeping aids. The products suggestion link took me to the site where the product is listed for purchase.

I like the story that introduces the products because even if I had not reviewed other posts and landed on this one at first, as a visitor, I would understand immediately what the post is about.

It so happens that I have family members who suffer from insomnia as well, or at least sleep disturbances. Some of them find it hard to fall asleep. Others don’t sleep well and they are restless through the night almost every night. I have purchased melatonin pills and sleeping aids for them to try to help them sleep.

This site is a good site of information and products to try out. I will be visiting it often. The information is concise and easy to understand.

    1. Thank you for taking the time to read this post and share your thoughts with me. I appreciate your words and your encouragement.
      Take care!
