Nutrition Essentials for Mental Health – Book Review

Nutrition Essentials for Mental Health: A Complete Guide to the Food-Mood Connection Review

I know you’re probably thinking “what in the world does mental health have anything to do with food?” right? I know I have been asking myself this for almost a year now. I remember my therapist asking me about my eating habits, I was a little confused. I mean, the possibility of there being a connection between food and my brain wasn’t really something I ever thought about.

After a few months, I decided to dig deeper into this topic that no one was talking about, and I was surprised to see the connection.

Most of the research that has been done regarding the effects that food can have on our mental health, has been limited due to the different responses it was getting. Regardless of the difference in every individual, there is still a high percentage of people that link having a poor, not nutritional, nor healthy diet, to their mental illnesses and struggles.

I took the time to find a reliable foundation that could give us some strong insights on this topic, and how to manage and improve the way we eat.

The Positives & The Negative

Just like everything in life, this is not an exception for it to not have critiques. I am going to be talking to you about the positive aspects, and also the negative one.

What Do I Like About This Book:

PRO #1: This book can be useful for professionals to bring awareness when it comes to mental health and the way their clients eat.

PRO #2: This is not the type of book that you only read once and then leave it on your bookshelf. The amount of resources and guidelines Dr. Korn offers is something that will go with you towards whatever path it is that you’re walking through.Nutrition Essentials for Mental Health: A Complete Guide to the Food-Mood Connection Review

What I Don’t Like About The Book:

CON #1: Keep in mind that this book is written by a certified doctor. Meaning – there may be some aspects of the book that can be hard to comprehend for its entirely.

That’s about the only critique I can formulate when it comes to this book. Regardless of that, I really do think that no other book has given such a delightful and brilliant explanation on what these two (mental health and food) have in common.

Who Is This Book For?

Nutrition Essentials for Mental Health can be for absolutely anyone. Professionals in the mental health or nutrition field can benefit from this book, but also anyone who wants to understand the connection between how our minds function and what we eat may affect the way we think.

You don’t need to have a degree on the mental health, or nutrition field to get your hands on this amazingly well-written book.

Final Thoughts

I am not a mental health professional, but from what I’ve read about the book (Chapter 5) I really enjoyed how Dr. Korn managed to fit food allergies, sensitivities, and other diets, into the mental health spectrum. She talks about the different types of amino acids, minerals, nutrients and vitamins that may help you improve your mental stability. In this chapter, she also discusses the withdrawals and side effects that involve detoxing yourself from a certain medication, or even an addiction and how it affects your well-being. There’s a part where Dr. Korn explains that we should see our kitchen as a pharmacy and treat our bodies as if we’re going to get a pharmaceutical remedy to improve our health.

Dr. Korn book review

While I was growing up it took me some time to figure out the career path that I wanted to take. I ended up in, somehow, the mental health department as I was starting my new journey towards becoming a social worker. This book would have been such a helpful tool regarding my own mental health and the lack of a healthy-nutritional diet. Also, it would’ve helped me during my career journey.

Dr. Korn’s unbelievably helpful resources and guides can help you not only effectively, but they can help you understand in a more in-depth way whatever it is that you’re struggling with at this very moment with your mental health.

As I said, this book contains a lot of clinical documentation and resources, but I deeply recommend it if you’re looking to expand your knowledge on nutrition and mental health, or if you simply want to learn how to manage your own illness.
